The Management Assistance Team works exclusively for all fifty state's fish and wildlife agencies across the nation. MAT also provides assistance to regional associations of these agencies and/or the Association of Fish and Wildlife agencies.

A state fish and wildlife agency typically requests assistance from MAT by an initial telephone call to the MAT office. MAT conducts a client interview about the work to be performed and dates are scheduled. Later, a letter of formal request from the Director of the agency is required and completes the client request process.
